Presenting at House of Genius Amsterdam

Presenting at House of Genius Amsterdam

From moderator to presenter. Last night I join two other entrepreneurs to present The Coffeevine at this start-up think tank

Amsterdam is widely accepted as one of Europe’s most prolific start-up cities. Not just because of its unlimited pool of international talent and excellent quality of life, but also because the city itself is full of places where creative individuals can come together to turn hobbies/dreams/visions into reality.

One of the many initiatives in town that supports this great development of entrepreneurship is House of Genius. Originally born in the US as a means to provide entrepreneurs of all kinds, whether they be starting up or already operating, with a high quality forum where they may seek feedback from an initally anonomous panel, House of Genius was quickly exported to cities all over the globe. Also to Amsterdam.

As a member of the organizing team I have been involved in a bunch of different sessions and have witnessed some amazing people present some truly original ideas to a panel made up of the most eclectic selection of professionals from all walks of life. Moderating the sessions is not just a great way to interact with people but it also provides you with a unique insight into how people think. And one of the best things about it is that as an entrepreneur or panel member you simply don’t know who you are presenting to talking to until the very last moment of the session. It could be investors, CEOs, other entrepreneurs, marketing specialtist, corporate lawyers, designers. You name it. They’ve all been there.

A few weeks ago Michael Koenka, head of the Amsterdam House of Genius, invited me to present The Coffeevine because he thought that I’d really benefit from some high quality feedback on the progress of my company. I gladly accepted and last night I faced the anonomous panel, which included some incredibly smart people. Out of the three presenters that night I was the last to go, after Mark Vernooij of Pulse and Guillaume Furminger of Fan Optics.

My presentation focused a little bit on the origins of The Coffeevine, how it started as blog through which I wanted to promote the best places to get great coffee in Amsterdam and how it fast became a personally curated guide to more than 26 cities across two continents. Then I shone some light on our coffee subscription service, which Erica and I have been working on so hard over the past few months and asked the panel for its thoughts on different ways through which we can further grow this high potential business.

After my seven minute presentation I was faced with some first thoughts from the panel, many of which were really great ideas and terribly useful for us. Then, when we entered the open discussion round, I further explained a couple of points, which some panel members had raised as questions or concerns. Throughout the 45 minutes that were assigned to The Coffeevine I was met with terribly smart questions, received truly great ideas for the future and at the end walked away with a bunch of great new contacts that might come in very handy in the near future. Of course, the fact that almost everyone, even the non-c0ffee drinkers, loved The Coffeevine, its unique and premium packaging and the whole story behind was a truly amazing feeling.

Although we’re still at the beginning of this long and winding road, House of Genius helped me to grow more confident in achieving my ambitions and confirmed that Erica and I are doing something right. And your support means more than anything! Thanks for being a reader, subscriber or follower. Without you we wouldn’t be here.
