Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and every time we feature a coffee from this origin, we’re always proud to present a new example this country’s excellent coffee production.
One of the most interesting aspects of Ethiopian coffee is that there is no specific varietal that is typical for this origin. Unlike Central America’s Caturra, Catuai and other varietals that are trademarks of countries like Nicaragua and Costa Rica, Ethiopian coffees consist almost always of mixed heirloom varieties that bring together a large number of often wild and rare coffee varietals.
Nonetheless, we’ve been fortunate enough to taste incredible flavour nuances that have ranged from lemon tea to rich stone fruit and everything in between.
This coffee from one of Budapest’s newest coffee roasters Beyond Within, is another great example of outstanding processing quality at origin and exquisite roasting. This coffee was one of the clear favourites on our cupping table last month and we’re proud to share it to you as part of our November ’16 lineup.
Sasaba processing station, in the Oromia region, is a relatively new supplier to green coffee importers Trabocca who brought this coffee to Europe. Located in a very remote part of the country, Sasaba processing station is really only accessible by Soviet-built 6×6 trucks that can trespass the rugged terrain.
Coffee beans from the surrounding small-hold farms are brought to this station for processing and are then transported to Europe in large containers. For the last few years, coffee farmers in this region have seen unusually large sized beans that have had exceptional qualities in the cup.
We’re very proud to add another unique Ethiopian coffee to our portfolio of previously featured coffees from this origin, and we’re proud to welcome the skilled team behind Beyond Within as our second Hungarian roaster to make the cut following Casino Mocca in 2014.

Fascinating, thank you so much for sharing, there are so many great, unique coffees coming out of Ethiopia, it sounds like Sasaba are really producing exceptional levels of quality and flavour.
