Discover The Visit’s Colombia, Jhon Leguizamon (in our January ’17 box)

Discover The Visit’s Colombia, Jhon Leguizamon (in our January ’17 box)

From the mountains of Tolima in Colombia to Berlin in Germany, this exquisite coffee roasted for us by The Visit will surprise your tastebuds

When we first popped into The Visit a few months ago, they had only just opened their doors to the public. Everything still felt and smelled new, but the team around Director of Coffee Damian Durda was already working on its daily routine with some of Berlin’s most advanced coffee-making equipment.

Damian, who originally hails from neighbouring Poland, has been in the specialty coffee world for a number of years and being part of the founding team at The Visit offered a unique opportunity to shape one of Berlin’s newest coffee roasteries from the very first moment.

During our second visit in December, things had moved forward significantly and Damian was rather pleased with the quality of his roasts. New coffees were coming in, the new bags had finally arrived and The Visit was ready to submit its first samples to our monthly blind-tasting session, which helps us determine the three winning coffees to go into our next coffee box.

This particular Colombia, Jhon Leguizamon was a rare treat on our cupping table last month. Our team of experts couldn’t place this coffee on the worldmap, making wild guesses that it tasted like a Kenya or maybe a Burundi? Its vibrant acidity and fruity notes certainly made it stand out and confused our experienced tasters.

For The Visit, this is the first year working with this beautiful coffee. The farm, La Esperanza, lies in the Tolima district of Colombia and was, for many years, run by Jhon’s mother who planted beans and green peas before receiving a recommendation from the Coffee Committee that she should switch to coffee.

Today, Jhon and his wife Ana Rosa are responsible for the farm’s daily business and they have been producing outstanding coffees for more than 15 years. For the irrigation of their coffee plants, Jhon and Ana Rosa make use of their own water source that comes from a small creek on their property. Intercrops such as banana, corn and plantain add additional variety to their output and provide shade for the coffee trees.

We’re extremely thrilled to be sharing this delicious coffee from The Visit and look forward to getting your feedback on our pick for the January ’17 box.
