Meet the roasters from our February ’17 box

Meet the roasters from our February ’17 box

This time we work with our old friends from Roestbar and two new roasters Fjord and Placid who are supplying us with three exquisite African coffees

Almost one whole month into 2017 and one delicious coffee box later, we’re now incredibly excited to start preparing our upcoming February ’17 box that will see us team up with one old friend, Roestbar, and two new friends, Fjord and Placid.

With President Trump in the White House already making his mark and important elections in key European countries coming up, we want to contribute our own part towards stability by continuing to supply you with the most delicious coffees we can find, every month.

This February ’17 edition, a great Valentine’s Day gift by the way, will have a focus on East Africa and showcase up to three exquisite coffees from this phenomenal coffee growing region. These are our three roasters this month:

#1: Fjord Coffee Roasters

This young Berlin roastery is the lovechild of Silo Coffee and Father Carpenter Coffee, two Australian owned and run specialty coffee shops in the German capital. Both of these shops, in the beginning, championed other local roasters and their coffees but last year decided to join forces and set up their own coffee roastery called Fjord.

The inspiration came from head roaster Kresten Thørgesen’s Norwegian heritage and the gorgeous, wide landscapes that this Nordic country offers translate into the open and friendly approach at Fjord. The goal is not just to supply their own coffee bars with coffee but also to carve out a small niche in Berlin’s feverishly competitive coffee roasting scene by offering a friendly and accessible approach.

#2: Roestbar

Somewhat of a legend in the German specialty coffee scene, Roestbar has been around longer than most of its brothers and sisters in Berlin, Hamburg or Munich, despite hailing from the much smaller city of Münster.

Roestbar was founded by Sandra Götting and Mario Joka back in 2003 who, over time, quietly built a mini empire that now consists of five shops in the renowned university city of Münster and employs none other than two-time German Barista Champion and World Barista Championship finalist Erna Tosberg.

The team behind Roestbar consistently sources the highest quality coffees they can find and previously made an appearance in our May ’16 coffee box with a beautiful natural processed Kenya. We’re proud to welcome them back into our midst with yet another exquisite Kenyan coffee – this seems to be their specialty – that clearly stood out as one of our absolutely favourites during our recent blind-cupping session.

Our selected coffee from Roestbar:

Kenya, Karimikui AA

Kirinyaga, 1.650masl

SL28 & SL34 – washed

#3: Placid Roasters

During a recent visit to Berlin a friend spoke to us about a new roastery from Lyon whose packaging was just mindblowing. Curious as a cat we immediately ventured to their website and, behold! Their packaging is indeed incredibly beautiful. Naturally we wondered if their coffees were too so we reached out to Aureline and Julien, founders of Placid Roasters, to send us some samples for our next cupping. Indeed they were!

For a nation that is still only slowly embracing specialty coffee, and in particular bright roasts that highlight acidity and fruity notes, roasters like Placid and fellow Lyonnaise roasters Mokxa who were featured in our November ’16 box, are doing very important work to introduce specialty coffee to an audience that is spoiled with some of the world’s best food and wine but deprived of decent coffee in the vast majority of the country.

Placid, a small-batch operation that doesn’t run its own café but instead closely works with its clients to create user-friendly cafés and to find the perfect coffees that suit each client’s preferences.

We’re extremely pleased to welcome Placid to the family and to showcase two of their beautiful coffees in our February ’17 box.

Our selected filter coffee from Placid:

Ethiopia, Dumerso

Yirgacheffe, 1.750 – 2.300masl
