Meet the roasters from our November ’16 box

Meet the roasters from our November ’16 box

This month we're taking you on a journey to Nicaragua, Rwanda and Ethiopia with freshly roasted coffees from Horsham Coffee, Mokxa and Beyond Within

Autumn has officially arrived in Amsterdam and we’re cozying up at our HQ with a cup of delicious hot coffee and lots of pumpkin soup. As the temperatures drop across Europe, our need for a heartwarming cuppa Joe will get bigger, not just to wake us up during those dark, cold mornings, but also to keep us going throughout the day.

We recently got together with our team of coffee professionals to sniff, taste and rate a range of coffees for our upcoming November ’16 box. The coffees were all truly amazing and it was hard to make a final selection but we’re very happy with the lineup that our team picked based on the final scores. Indeed, we’re able to welcome three new partners to our big family of amazing roasters. Find out more below.

#1: Horsham Coffee Roasters

Located in the southern English town of Horsham, Horsham Coffee Roasters have been on our wishlist for quite some time. Finally, we found an opportunity to feature one of their delicious direct trade coffees in our upcoming November ’16 box.

Founded in a garage in 2012 by Bradley and Amelia Steenkamp, Horsham Coffee Roasters quickly grew from a tiny home operation into a healthy specialty coffee business that now supplies many excellent coffee shops in the UK and private customers across the world. Today they roast their coffees on a 25kg Joper roaster in a site that’s four times the original garage space from the founding days.

They pride themselves on sourcing and roasting extremely high quality and ethically trades coffees from origins such as Rwanda and Nicaragua, with whom they also maintain direct trade relationships. One such example is the Nicaragua, El Diamante coffee that we picked for our November ’16 box.

Don Francisco
Don Francisco

Owned by Don Francisco and his wife Bianca Nieve, El Diamante is a farm that lies at an unusually high altitude resulting in a harvest period that takes place two full month after the rest of the country. Part of the farm is covered by natural forest to allow fresh spring water to bubble to the surface undisturbed. They are also associated with Gold Mountain Coffee Growers, a social enterprise organisation that connects high-cupping coffee growers with coffee roasters such as Horsham Coffee Roasters. Great care is taken to ensure that each coffee is processed to meet the highest quality standards, something that becomes evident when enjoying this particular coffee.

#2: Mokxa

Our newest French partner doesn’t hail from Paris for a change. Instead Mokxa joins our exquisite list of coffee roasting partners as the first representative of the central French city of Lyon.

Founded by Sadry Alexandre Abidi, Mokxa has done its best to break the mold of traditional French coffee by offering the people of Lyon and further afield a fresh take on coffee. Going by the three guiding principles of ‘freshness’, ‘quality’ and ‘traceability’, Mokxa roasts its fine range of coffees at its roastery while serving the coffees in a separate café in the heart of Lyon

We’re thrilled to welcome them to our family with a delicious Rwandan coffee from Gitega station. This coffee achieved very high scores during our cupping and will please every coffee lover with its full body and rich syrupy aftertaste.

#3: Beyond Within

One of the most recent specialty coffee roasteries to appear on the Budapest coffee scene is Beyond Within. Founded by a team of qualified coffee professionals led by Peter Repka, the entire Beyond Within team spent some time working as baristas at Budapest’s very first specialty coffee shop Madal Cafe.

In 2014 the team began to experiment with roasting its own coffees and was ready to officially enter the market with its first set of coffees in 2015. They, like all of our coffee roasting partners, are obsessed with fresh, outspoken and delicious coffees that they roast to perfection at their Budapest based roastery.
