Berlin has, without a doubt, one of Europe’s most buzzing third wave coffee scene, and not unlike other major cities like London or Amsterdam, a lot of those cafés and roasters are located in the East of the city. Think Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain and increasingly Neukölln. This may lead you to think that if you happen to be doing your shopping on Friedrichstrasse or looking for a place to rest your weary legs after a whole day on the museum island, you must go back to those neighbourhoods, but you don’t.

Almost perfectly hidden in plain sight is a small coffee bar that is breaking the mould and serving really great coffee, delicious cakes and other goodies to people in Mitte. Run by the charismatic Tansel Özbek, Refinery boldly claims to be a place for ‘High end coffee’ and indeed, its Bonanza-roasted house blend and monthly guest coffees from the likes of Man versus Machine are testimony to that.

The interior offers a number of cozy booths, a meeting corner at the back and a few window seats for those who just want to gulp down a quick espresso while scanning the morning headlines. All of the cakes are homemade, coming in different shapes and sizes and varieties.

Tansel wanted to create an accessible yet homely place for people to come and hang out at, eat a healthy lunch or get more acquainted with specialty coffees. Her baristas are always quick to explain the various coffees on offer and what you can expect flavour-wise. During the time of our visit we were recommended the Burundi, Buziraguhindwa from Man versus Machine, a vibrant and floral coffee that perfectly accompanied a slice of rich banana cake.

Refinery may be slightly off the beaten track for those looking for Berlin’s most hipster hangouts, but those who are intending to soak up more of the city’s incredibly wealth of arts and culture, should make Refinery their place to refuel and recharge.
