Buna 42 is the latest project by local coffee pioneers Buna, the same guys who operate El Tercer Lugar and Espresso in Mercado Roma. Their newest baby has only been around for a short time but it certainly takes specialty coffee to new levels. Initially intended to house a café and the roastery, it was being rebuilt at the time of my visit. Instead of the roastery it will now have a large kitchen so that guests can also enjoy freshly prepared breakfasts, lunches and other snacks.

The roastery has been moved into a laboratory space in Colonia Doctores where the Buna team experiment with different coffees from around the country to pick only those that match their high quality standards.

Buna 42 is definitely the closest you’ll ever get to the innovative coffee shops of London, San Francisco or Copenhagen. It is also only the second place in the world where I’ve seen the funky looking Modbar espresso machine. The other being Buðin in New York.

At Buna 42 you can get pretty much the same kind of coffees that you can also get at El Tercer Lugar, except that the coffee bar here is much better equipped and staffed. Since on the day of my visit it was rather hot outside I decided to go for a refreshing cold brew horchata that cooled me right down. The outside seating area is great for doing some people watching and tuning into the current state of affairs amongst Mexico City’s hipsters.

Here the guys also sell all sorts of slow brewing equipment that is normally harder to find in this vast metropolis. Workshops can be attended at their roastery.

If this bar is anything to go by, then Mexico City’s in for a treat. Let’s hope this is only the beginning of a great local specialty coffee culture that continues to celebrate the country’s fantastic coffee growing heritage.
