If you’re an avid reader of magazines like Monocle, Wallpaper, Frame and so on, you will undoubtedly have come across a wide range of beautiful little shops and stores that specialize in gorgeously handcrafted products. Sadly, most of the time these stores are miles away from where you are, so you’re left dreaming about a visit. Until you happen to that moment comes and you happen to be in the right place at the right time.

During a recent visit to the Taiwanese capital Taipei, I met up with local coffee blogger and competition judge Jerry Chang who, after meeting me for coffee at Fika Fika, said: “Let’s go to meet my business partner. He has this lovely shop that is really hard to find and I am 100% sure you will love.” So, after drowning our cups of coffee, we jumped in a taxi and headed over to Scene Homeware, a Monocle-worthy store in the backstreets of Taipei.

Run by Stephen Lee, former musician and producer, Scene stocks some of the most beautiful coffee brewing equipment I’ve ever seen, enriched by various homewares, magazines and more. If you’re not in a shopping mood or you just want to sweeten the deal with a great cup of coffee, Stephen owns a beautiful, Specht Design customized La Marzocco GS3 which he uses to make really great coffee.

While pulling a shot of Tim Wendelboe’s Gicherori, Stephen explained: “People don’t really buy music any more, but they do buy coffee. So I just moved from one passion to another, and I haven’t looked back.”

How could you, if you’re surrounded by stunning products by the likes of Tetra Drip, The Coffee Registry, Monarch and more?

Being the home of the current World Barista Champion and a bourgoning specialty coffee scene, Taipei is already a more sophisticated coffee city than most of its European counterparts and Scene Homeware is there to supply its caffeine-thirsty residents with whatever their hearts may desire. Monocle, take note.
