It’s been a bit quiet on the coffee scene in Amsterdam. After real boom a few years ago, we only saw the occasional new arrival – such as Bocca’s spectacular store – that was really worth talking about. Until now.

Open since this week Tuesday inside the former and incredibly unassuming Ijscuypje store on Bilderdijkstraat, Monks Coffee Roasters is a coffee bar plus par excellance. If you used to come here to get your ice cream you’d never think the space was this massive and spectacular.

As you enter, you are immediately greeted by a beautiful bar, and in most cases by owner Patrick Abbott who does a great job at playing maî·tre d’. “When we finally found this place, after more than 1 1/2 years of looking, I could hardly believe my luck,” Abbott explained. “We have a garden, space for a full on kitchen and even a restaurant license. That’s super rare in this town.”

The interior has a tasteful industrial charm without appearing cold. A stunning copper pipe installation along the main wall spells out ‘Monks’, a play on Abbott’s surname. “It’s also an easy name to remember in both Dutch and English,” Abbott continued.

The coffee bar is currently manned by Matt and Jean, while Patrick is called in to help out with filter coffee orders. He got his inspiration for this place during a long stint in Australia where he ran a successful hospitality concept agency in Perth before spending time working with some leading coffee roasters and café owners in Melbourne.

His vision for Monks is simple. “We want to offer a couple of things: great coffee, great vibes and great food. Our kitchen will be installed in the coming six months, with our roaster following soon after. When everything’s up and running, we want to give our customers a slice of Melbourne right here in Amsterdam,” Abbott concluded.

Without a doubt, Monks is a great new addition to the Amsterdam coffee scene, serving a custom blend provided by Bocca for the time being. Make sure to visit while it’s still a well-kept secret.
