Screaming Beans is one of Amsterdam’s most iconic coffee businesses. Having been around for many years and being one of the first coffee shops to focus on high quality specialty coffees, Screaming Beans has since undergone a complete rebranding and repositioning.

It’s first store on the Hartenstraat was once a slightly more casual affair before Dick Van den Heuvel and his team decided to change directions and take things up a notch. The initial coffee shop on Hartenstraat underwent some serious refurbishing and is now likely to be the only specialty coffee bar in town that offers table service.

Most recently, Screaming Beans opened a second store on Haarlemmerstraat, one of the city’s main shopping throughfares. This cozy shop that has a similar offering to the original Hartenstraat and also focuses on great coffee and simple meals like breakfasts and some baked goods. Sasja Delahay, part of the Screaming Beans leadership team told me that the company wants to put more focus on its coffee in the coming months but kept exact plans under wraps.

Haarlemmerstraat is a notoriously contested playground with many a coffee places already located at various points throughout the street but often with highly varying quality. Screaming Beans may not be the biggest coffee place amongst them but it’s certainly a nice addition to a lively street that offers a lot of upmarket shopping.

At this location they also have a small space dedicated to coffee retail, offering a range of different coffees that are custom roasted for them by Bocca, next to a bunch of coffee equipment and Screaming Beans t-shirts.

If there is one point of criticism then it’s the fact that I still think their beautiful design chairs are not very comfortable, but luckily there is also plenty of bench seating.
