Noc Noc – Rotterdam (NL)

New arrival in Rotterdam’s coffee district, serving great quality coffees, including the coffees from our monthly tasting box.

That Rotterdam is starting to get a name for itself in the Dutch coffee scene is no news. The port city in the south of the country is exciting, vibrant and full of cool new ventures. One such place is Noc Noc, situated on the fringe of Rotterdam Blaak station in what co-owner Celia Tang referred to as the ‘coffee district’.

Indeed, Noc Noc rubs shoulders with old favourites Picknick, Urban Espresso and Coffee Company but it’s the first place in this part of town that also has a wide range of filter coffee methods on display. As you enter Noc Noc you immediately notice its high ceilings, industrial look and floor to ceiling windows that provide lots of natural light.

The espresso machine and slow brew equipment sit side by side at the back of the bar where different baristas whip up your favourite classics like an espresso or a flat white but Noc Noc also has more refined coffee options such as the syphon and the Kalita.

Currently Noc Noc works with Bocca for all of its espresso bean needs, offering two single origin espressi to choose from while their filter coffees always hail from different roasters such as Headfirst or Man met Bril. As a matter of fact, Celia has been a subscriber to our coffee subscription service almost since day one and offered me a glass of home made slow drip using the Costa Rica Finca Santos from Nømad Coffee that we featured in our ‘Summer love’ July ’15 tasting box.

Noc Noc stands for ‘Not only coffee’ ‘Not ordinary coffee’ and Celia and the team are trying to educate their regulars and new customers on the many facettes of specialty coffee. She said: “Most people here in Rotterdam are simply not used to filter coffee, at least not the kind that we serve. When you say that you serve filter coffee they often think they’ll get a cup of Douwe Egberts coffee, haha!”

Next door to Noc Noc you’ll find the first outlet of Belgian burger restaurant ‘Burgerij’ with whom Noc Noc share sanitary facilities. Noc Noc is a great place to sit down and work away on your most recent novel while sipping on a delicious cup of Coffeevine selected filter coffee. As one of the few coffee places they also have an alocohol license and they’re open until late so there’s nothing stopping you now from coming in and enjoying a well deserved gin & tonic too!
