Let me be frank. It has been quite a while that I’ve been this excited about a new arrival on the Amsterdam coffee scene. In fact, there hasn’t been much to talk about here as of late, and to make matters worse, one of our most favourite places, Koko, recently shut its doors after many years of bringing great coffee and design to the city’s Red Light District.

By mere coincidence I stumbled upon the Newwerktheater last week when I was invited by Creative Mornings Amsterdam to give a talk on the topic of ‘survival’ where I took to the stage in the upstairs part of this beautifully restored theater building on the eastern fringe of the city center.

Closed for many years, Newwerktheater recently returned to newly found glory after the owners of local creative agency …,staat, Jochem Leegstra and Julia Kortekaas fell in love with this space and turned it into a mixed use building that now houses their agency, a photostudio, a beautiful attic, a large theatre and a truly amazing restaurant / café / bar.

It almost borders on the embarrassing that I was not aware of this place’s existence, therefore I am even more thrilled to tell you about it now.

Managed by former Ace Hotel Shoreditch bar manager Milou Vaal, the horeca space is a real winner with a top notch coffee set up, serving Bonanza Coffee – the only coffee bar to do so next to Toki -, excellent breakfast, lunch and dinner (only on Friday evenings for now) and an outstanding yet compact boozy menu. Whether you’re after a scrumptious serving of eggs Benedict, a rich and delicious steak sandwich or a refreshing after work cocktail, this may just be the new place to be.

The coffee bar was designed in collaboration with …,staat and Bonanza, who spent a decent amount of time providing training and knowledge to the team, something that becomes imminently obvious when you inspect the coffee menu, and consequently the beverage you are being served. Have you ever tried an espresso yuzu tonic?

The interior retains many of the theatre’s original elements, combining rich colours with dynamic shapes and thoughtful details, like the plants atop of the cupboards and above the entrance ceiling. What’s more, Newwerktheater also offers meeting spaces that can be rented by the hour alongside a huge photo studio and a stunning attic space for larger events.

Amsterdam’s notoriously compact architecture impedes it from sporting the London or Berlin style coffee bars and restaurants that have become so synonymous with those capital cities, but every now and again we are lucky enough to have daring and forward-thinking entrepreneurs whi don’t shy away from creating something truly beautiful inside the most unexpected spaces. Newwerktheater may just be my new favourite hangout in the city. 5 stars, well deserved.
