In a part of town that used to be a real “no go” area, different entrepreneurs are breathing new life into derelict buildings and former prostitution hang outs. Previously reviewed De Zeeuwse Meisjes was the first concept store that offers great coffee and design and now there’s something very exciting called Fenix Food Factory where a number of food craftsmen and women have come together to showcase their delicious and beautifully made products. Amongst them are a cheese maker, a beer brewer, a butcher, a bakery, a local produce market, a cider shop and a coffee roaster, called Stielman.

Stielman was set up by Edwin Overmars who started roasting coffee on his balcony back in the day, trying out different roast profiles to find what he personally liked the most. When Fenix Food Factory was beginning to take shape, he spotted an opportunity to take his passion for coffee to the people. Although the operation is quite small, you get a really good idea of how great coffee is crafted. Edwin’s roaster is easily visible and you’re welcome to try his different coffees.

At the time of writing he was still waiting for an espresso machine to be delivered so he can also offer things like cappuccinos and flat whites but his operation is more focused on slow coffee and tastings. The great thing about Fenix Food Factory is that you can buy a platter, which allows you to pick up something from every business in the hall. I.e. you’ll get some delicious meat, cheese, beer, bread and coffee. What more can one want?

Keeping true to Fenix’s look and feel, Edwin will use some old school coffee makers to serve his brew of the day. Interestingly, he doesn’t have 250g or 500g bags of his coffee. Stielman coffees come in 175g, 350g and 700g bags. Edwin argues: “350g is just about enough coffee for the average coffee drinker to last him two weeks, that’s why we also ship out new bags with freshly roasted coffee every two weeks. To maintain ultimate freshness.”

Fenix Food Factory is probably the most exciting food hall in The Netherlands and we’re glad to know that a coffee roaster is part of the team of people who create and serve delicious food and drinks. When are you going?
