Stockholm, like the rest of Scandinavia, played a vital role in the creation and establishment of Nordic Coffee Culture, the term often associated with lighter roast profiles, filter coffee, cinnamon buns, minimalist café interiors and more. While the Swedish capital has, in some respects, been taken over by Copenhagen with regards to more daring and adventurous concepts, it is still home to many worldclass roasters and coffee shops. This article will help you find the best coffee in Stockholm.
During a recent visit there, I had the chance to retrace my steps after a long break of many years since my previous visit. Zipping around town by metro, bus and e-scooter, I tried to cover a large area to bring you a really comprehensive guide to the city’s best specialty coffee shops.
If you have not yet watched the video guide on Instagram or Tiktok, be sure to give it a whirl and follow along for more great tips on where to get the best coffee around the world.
List of cafés covered in this video
Gast
This large coffee shop has a fresh selection of delicious buns, serves coffee from Standout and has good food. It’s a popular work spot but also feels quite lively. The espresso and batch brews are really good though I was personally a bit disappoined by the eggs Benedict.
Pascal Kaffe Bar
One of the finest specialty coffee brands in Stockholm, Pascal runs a few locations around town and also has its own bakery. This location is really focused on high quality coffee and is managed by Håkan Sävlind who competed in the Swedish Brewers Cup and Barista Championships. Nowadays, Pascal also roasts its own coffee, which is excellent.
Drop Coffee
No guide to Stockholm would be complete without including one of its OGs, Drop Coffee. What started out as a humble coffee shop in 2009 has become one of Sweden’s most recognized coffee brands and its charming co-owner Joanna Alm is herself an award-winning roaster. These days, Drop is run by her and her husband Stephen Leighton, formally of Has Bean fame. The café is a great place to taste all of Drops outstanding coffees.
Komet
A more unusual coffee shop, primarly because of its use of an Eversys fully automated espresso machine, Komet is a good neighbourhood choice with the same tasty treats from the Pascal/Komet bakery and a good selection of different roasters from around Sweden. The coffee was actually pretty decent.
Volca Coffee Roasters
A small but charming coffee shop and roastery run by run by a group of Latin Americans. Their goal is to bring a slice of their cultures and heritage to Sweden by offering coffees and foods from different Latin American origins. This is a great place to tuck into an empanada and enjoy a fragrant Costa Rican filter coffee.
Svedjan
This huge space is primarily a bakery churning out loaves and pastries all day long. Their coffee offering is also really good. At the time of my visit, they were serving Koppi but rumour had it that they were going to start roasting their own coffees soon.
AB Café
A bit further out in the burbs, this cute coffee shop is in a beige working class neighbourhood but is known for its excellent food and coffee. Here they serve Standout Coffee and when I was there, I had to tuck into a Semla, which is a traditional pastry eaten before the start of lent.
