Climpson & Sons are somewhat of an institution in London’s specialty coffee scene. There is no doubt about it. They have been at the very forefront of the third wave coffee movement for many years and continuosly work to improve their quality, practices and quality. We have had a very close relationship with Climpson & Sons since the very first tasting box we ever shipped and they are only one of two roasters who we will have featured for the third time in one of our coffee boxes.

While sorting out our thoughts for this post about Climpson & Sons, we tried to pinpoint exactly what makes them such amazing people to work with and the answer is simple: they are like family to us. We trust them completely and the trust us completely, making our collaboration a real treat for both sides.
When we reached out to them recently to invite them to send us potential candidates for our November ’17 box, they were just as excited by the prospect of working with us again as we were to finally have one of their coffees in our current coffee box. And, truth be told, their coffees blew our team away during the most recent cupping session leaving us with a tough choice: which one to pick?
The coffee that we eventually settled for is Climpson’s Slopes of 8, an outstanding Kenyan coffee from the Kirinyaga region. Offering a truly vibrant acidity with exquisite layers of red fruit, star fruit and more, this coffee from a group of eight smallholders will be a real treat for any lover of Kenyan coffees. Uniquely, this group of producers doesn’t sell its coffees at the traditional Kenyan auction but rather directly to roasters like Climpson & Sons. This means they can completely control their own processing methods and keep the biggest part of their earnings.
Using nothing but the most advanced equipment such as a Loring SmartRoast S35, Climpson have been supplying caffeine-hungry Londoners and people from further afield, including our Coffeevine customers, for many years and their iconic roastery below the railway arches in Hackney has become somewhat of a holy site of London coffee. On weekends, especially in summer, this well-hidden place turns into a big magnet for friends and family to come together over outstanding coffee, locally brewed beer, pizza and more.
We’re thrilled and grateful to finally have our friends back in our midst, this time with a truly delicious Kenyan coffee.
