People Possession: A sub-culture kid from Paris takes the stage

Melting street art, fashion and craft beer culture together, People Possession from Paris is a hot coffee start up with something to say

While the Olympics are in full swing in Paris, many local residents have fled the city in search for less crowded places. In their place have come sports-crazy visitors who join the already huge number of regular vistors that the city of love gets every month. Funnily enough, a recent newspaper headline from The Guardian claimed that the Paris Olympics are marked by extortionate launderettes and sub-par coffee.

I’m like, where are these people going? Because as far as I can recall from my most recent visit to Paris, the French capital was brimming with great coffee places. Naturally, I have been a huge fan of French roasters, especially those who have been pushing the boundaries of what is possible. One exciting new brand that I am super proud to share with our Coffeevine customers in August is called People Possession.

Based in Paris and run by a group of coffee-crazy kids, People Possession is a true sub-culture brand that incorporates aspects of street art, craft beer and fashion into its DNA. Its coffees come in beautiful custom-designed cans and each of its lots is carefully selected to represent a particular single farmer’s finest output. By travelling to origin countries and creating close bonds with these farmers, the guys at People Possession aim to offer their customers something distinct and special.

Its cans are a real statement and are currently only available via selected resellers. They cannot be ordered online. This makes the whole idea of working with People Possession even more exciting. For its Coffeevine debut, it sent us a bunch of coffees to choose from for our selection process and honestly, it was tough to make a choice. Each of the coffees was a real standout and offered something really unique.

In the end, we did make a choice and the winner was a stunning Laurina cultivar from Colombia’s Finca Granja Esperanza. The Laurina cultivar has an interesting history, a curious shape and a naturally low level of caffeine, which has led to a resurgence in popularity over the past few years as coffee drinkers proactively look for more caffeine light coffees. The Laurina variety traces its origins back to the French overseas department of Reunion in the Indian Ocean. It is a natural mutation of the Bourbon variety that was introduced to Reunion from Yemen in the 18th century. Its slightly elongated and thin shape make it look more like a rice corn than a coffee bean. Very unusual.

With its mellow cup profile and unique characteristics, this coffee was the perfect candidate for a GEMS feature and we’re glad that we are getting the unique opportunity to work with People Possession this month to share this coffee with you. Expect a super delicate and fruity cup with notes of florals and juicy stone fruit.
