When I was in Madrid a few weeks ago, I wanted to retrace some of my steps from a few years prior. I used to spend quite a bit of time in the Spanish capital before. Some close friends used to live there and I generally really loved the city’s vibe. Two people I used to see regularly back then were Nolo Botana and Pablo Caballero of Hola Coffee. After paying them a short visit at their office, walked a few blocks to check out The Fix Coffee Roasters in Argüelles.
This is one of the city’s leading specialty coffee roasters and I had the opportunity to try their coffees in a few other places. Their café is a nice place with limited seating and no terrace. It really feels like a inconspicuous neighbourhood coffee shop that specialises more in take away and retail sales of The Fix’s beans.
I took a seat inside and ordered a flat white. I had a fun conversation with the barista about my choice of coffee because she suggested I pick the Colombian coffee for my milk-based beverage but I decided to go for the natural Ethiopia. I think natural processed coffees taste better with milk because they have more sweetness. They are also a bit more exciting.
Hugo Jimenez, The Fix’s co-owner and head roaster was very much inspired by people like Tim Wendelboe in Norway. That level of attention to detail and class in specialty coffee is what he wanted to bring to Madrid. It’s true that the Spanish capital is still lagging behind Barcelona in terms of it’s specialty coffee offerings. It has few exciting roasters that are known beyond its borders but The Fix is doing an amazing job at being one of the city’s leading roasteries.
The café also has a pretty wide-ranging food menu. You can enjoy dishes like a Bircher Müsli, a full English breakfast or Pulled Pork Tacos. They also have a fine selection of cakes and other sweet treats. I really liked the place and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is visiting Madrid or spending a longer period of time there!
