When you think of Mallorca you think of sunshine, azure blue waters and often, unfortunately, rancid package tourists. But Mallorca has lots of different facettes and venturing off the beaten path reveals a gorgeous island waiting to be discovered.
The same thing is true for its food and drinks scene. Naturally, you’ll find lots of average places that will serve lacklustre Spanish fare or tourist food aimed at pleasing unadventurous tourists from Germany, the UK or Holland but Mallorcan cuisine has been making headlines in recent years for its use of fresh local produce and creative cooking.
During a recent visit to this lovely Spanish island my friends and I followed up on a tip given to us by a devoted Coffeevine fan. Apparently there was a lovely café that served really good coffee and great food. After 4am start to catch our flights, that was exactly what we were in desperate need of.
La Molienda is a friendly corner café just north of the city center, with a lovely terrace that invites you to while away with a perfectly prepared Flat White and some poached eggs with avocado on a toasted bun. Run by Mallorca natives Miguel, Tony and Maria Jose, La Molienda is the first coffee shop on the island to serve very high quality specialty coffee roasted by Barcelona-based Right Side Coffee and various guest roasters like The Barn and Origin Coffee Roasters.
Miguel and Tony both spent some time in London where they discovered the full spectrum of specialty coffee before Miguel did a few winter stints at Toma Cafe in Madrid. La Molienda first opened its doors on October 17th 2014 and was the first coffee bar on the island to put great emphasis on sourcing and brewing top notch coffees.
The food menu is compact but excellent and they even have delicious looking cinnamon rolls made by a local baker. All in all, if you’re after an delicious cup of coffee or you just want to relax away from the tourist trail, La Molienda is exactly the kind of place you need.
