The 5 best Specialty Coffee Shops in Gothenburg – An Expert’s Guide

Find some of the best specialty coffee in Gothenburg with this handy guide. All places were personally visited by our editor in chief!

Here’s your ultimate list of must-visit cafés in Gothenburg, each personally visited and reviewed. From friendly neighbourhood cafés to legendary institutions.

Earlier this year, I attended the Nordic Coffee Fest for the first time. I had heard much about it and was keen to check it out. Gothenburg is a city that has always been at the forefront of Nordic coffee culture, some might even say more so than Stockholm.

Home to a great number of world-class coffee roasters and the spiritual home of the cinnamon bun, Gothenburg is a relaxed city with a friendly vibe. Although some places that I wanted to visit weren’t open on the weekends, I managed to put together a pretty decent guide that will help you find some of the best coffee shops in town.

After reading this guide you will:

✅ Know where some of the best specialty coffee is served in Gothenburg

✅ Learn what makes each recommended place unique

✅ Feel inspired to go explore Gothenburgs’s coffee scene

ALKEMISTEN – Like a big library with vintage furniture and great coffee

☕️ A good place to visit away from the center. Serves Ritu Coffee, a local roastery

🛋️ Lots of big sofas and a bar along the floor to ceiling windows

💬 The Coffeevine says: Nice to visit if you either live or work in the area

A43 – One of Gothenburg’s longest running multi-roaster cafés

Sturegatan 8, 114 35 Stockholm, Sweden

☕️ A cosy multi-roaster café founded by Aldrin Doudchitzky who transformed a former electronics store into a haven for coffee and tasty food

🛋️ There is a backroom upstairs with more seating but I preferred sitting opposite the bar

💬 The Coffeevine says: A classic independently owned business that showcases roasters from near and far away

DA MATTEO – The pioneers of specialty coffee in Gothenburg, now a real institution

Magasinsgatan 17A, 411 18 Göteborg, Sweden

☕️ A behemoth in Gothenburg with a few different locations, Da Matteo is unmissable.

🛋️ Magasinsgatan torg is basically completely owned by Da Matteo with the massive roastery on one side and a large café on the other.

💬 The Coffeevine says: From cinnamon buns to soup and from freshly brewed competition lots to perfect flat whites, Da Matteo is the gift that keeps on giving

“Gothenburg might be more relaxed than Stockholm but it is home to some of the best roasters in the country.”

SOL BAGERI – A relative newcomer offering exquisite freshly baked bread and charming vibes

Eklandagatan 8, 412 55 Göteborg, Sweden

☕️ Cute bakery and coffee bar serving a variety of roastery like Swerl and Morgon

🛋️ Sunny interiors, friendly owners and generally nice place to visit away from the center
