Fjord Coffee: Reinventing a Berlin institution

Fjord Coffee: Reinventing a Berlin institution

One of our favourite regular roasters from the German captial is back for a fresh new colla with an excellent washed Peruvian coffee

A few years ago, I was in Berlin in the depths of winter. I had probably spent the weekend in Berghain back when I was still a raver but on that misterable Monday morning, I was wading through knee high snow (remember that?) to visit a brand new roastery that had just opened and that wanted my business. I am speaking of Fjord, of course, the famed Berlin institution that was set up by the founders of Silo Coffee and Father Carpenter, two iconic specialty coffee and brunch cafés that greatly shaped the Berlin food scene.

I recall Kresten Thorgesen, one of its founders, telling me years later that our consequent order of one of Fjord’s coffees was the biggest wholesale order they had gotten to date and how we had helped them get started. It is still a proud memory for me because that is, in part, what The Coffeevine is all about. We connect with exciting roasters and help them reach new audiences all over the world.

In the years since, Fjord has become a regular Coffeevine partner who we love working with. Its coffees are wildly distinct, offering a wide palette of flavours, origins and processes. From their regular bread and butter coffees to their exceptional competition lots, Fjord is always seeking exciting coffees that represent specialty coffee in its most diverse form.

As a purely wholesale minded roastery, Fjord is able to put its entire focus on sourcing and roasting these beautiful coffees to perfection. And despite all this success, Fjord also has had to reinvent itself somewhat in recent years. Kresten, has left the company’s everyday business to set up another roastery by the name of his original café, Father Carpenter who we featured back in December of 2023 for the first time while its other co-founder Morgan Love has also taken a backseat.

Luckily, Fjord has been able to navigate these new waters effortlessly and is now joining The Coffeevine for a fresh new feature with a really exquisite washed Peruvian coffee from Puente Solaya. This coffee, in all fairness, was not our first choice from Fjord because we already had chosen an outstanding washed Peruvian coffee from Kava Family but it is none the less delicious coffee from this still largely underrepresented origin.

Peruvian coffees have a tendency to be community projects and thus are not always single variety. This particular batch consists of Caturra and Pache. Pache is often misspelled and actually refers to Pacamara, the hybrid variety that was created in El Salvador during the 1960’s. This coffee has a complex cup profile with lots of depth and richness. Can’t get enough of it!
