Completing our lineup of this month’s ‘Britain & Northern Ireland special’ are Root & Branch from the city of Belfast. These awesome guys who previously ran a mobile coffee cart before deciding to stop sourcing their coffees from other roasters and setting up shop in the Ormeau neighbourhood join our other Celtic roasters Coaltown from Wales and Artisan Roast from Scotland in the first ever coffee box that shines a light on the amazing work that talented roasters are doing, away from coffee hotspots London and Dublin.
While attending the London Coffee Festival this year, we met with Root & Branch co-founder Ben Craig for a coffee at Origin Coffee in Shoreditch to chat about their story and to figure out if Root & Branch and Coffeevine would be good partners in crime. Indeed we were.
Ben and his co-founder Simon Johnston toured all over Ireland for more than five years, brewing up a storm at markets, festivals and pop-up locations before deciding it was time for a permanent spot and a space where they could get their hands dirty with roasting their own coffee.
These days, the supply many great coffee bars all over Northern Ireland and further afield with the exquisite selections of outstanding single origin coffees and we are incredibly pleased to welcome them to our June ’17 coffee box with their truly outstanding Kenya Othayo.
If you didn’t know why we set out to work with these three Celtic roasters, then let us quickly fill you in. Anyone familiar enough with the British coffee scene will know that the vast majority of action happens in London. The British capital is filled to the brim with amazing roasters and great coffee bars, and that also has as a consequence that roasters in other parts of the country are sometimes overlooked. Naturally, these guys work just as hard or even harder to bring great coffees to their local communities, often being the very first ones to do so.
Our goal this month was to look beyond London and to showcase what three unique roasters are up to in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland, and we believe our selection of partners is a great representation for these three countries that form part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
