Discover Horsham’s Nicaragua El Diamante coffee (in our November ’16 box)

A fine coffee from the highlands of Nicaragua tells the story of a coffee growers network that brings out the best in coffee and the people who grow it

Central America is one of the world’s finest coffee growing regions and a beautiful place to visit also. Nicaragua is the region’s largest country, and its wealth of colonial towns, volcanic islands, beaches and mountainous regions make it incredibly varied and interesting.

We’re very happy to feature a fine coffee from this lovely country in the form of Horsham Coffee Roasters, El Diamante. This finca is located in the highlands of Jinotega in the northwestern region of the country. Run by husband and wife team Don Francisco and Blanca Nieve (Snow White), this farm produces outstanding coffees whose rhythm is slightly out of sync with the rest of the country.

Because of the farm’s remote location and high altitude, Don Francisco and his team harvest their coffees almost a full two months after the rest of the country. This is due to the colder climate and the increased cloud cover that defines the microclimate at El Diamante.

The coffees are then collected and processed by Gold Mountain Coffee Growers, a direct trade social enterprise with its own farm, Finca Idealista. This organisation employs around 80 people from the local area in a top of the range processing facility where an a consistently high level of quality is achieved through mechanical sorting and removal of defects.

In addition to producing excellent coffees, Gold Mountain also runs a number of initiatives that have created great value in the local communities. They extend microcredits to farmers, invest in irrigation solutions and processing equipment and care for the farming community’s families.

In 2016 they were given the SCAE sustainability award for their efforts to protect endangered species and conserve the rainforest.

Horsham Coffee Roasters have been working with this organisation for many years and this particular coffee performed extraordinarily well during our most recent blind-tasting session. (Interested in finding out how we pick our coffees? Read our blog post)
