Hungary’s finest are back again!

Hungary’s finest are back again!

From the beautiful city of Budapest comes this highly professional outfit with truly amazing coffees and wonderfully playful packaging.

We recently had a very interesting conversation with a fellow coffee lover who is a big fan of our box and regularly tells his friends about us. He said: “Some of my friends say they don’t know the roasters that you work with. They ask why don’t you work with more commonly known names?” The question left us a bit stunned but offered a great opportunity to highlight anew why we think it’s so incredibly important to work with both well known names as well as best kept secrets, new and upcoming roasters and those who you may simply never have heard of.

Our fascinating continent is one big mish mash of cultures, traditions, languages, cuisines and more, and that is also reflected in the local coffee cultures wherever you go. Our goal as one of Europe’s leading coffee subscription services is to fairly represent all of that diversity in our boxes. If we only worked with a handful of roasters, we would not be able to uncover and represent all of those amazing people who are spread out all over Europe and who are all doing their part towards making great coffee more accessible to their local communities.

One such roaster is Casino Mocca although these guys are already pretty well known. Hailing from the beautiful city of Budapest, Casino Mocca were at the forefront of the development of the specialty coffee scene in Hungary. Interestingly, Budapest already had a very well developed specialty coffee scene well ahead of the likes of Paris and to some degree even Amsterdam, but what it lacked was a good number of great local roasters who could supply their local coffee shops and be ambassadors for their country abroad.

Luckily, there is now Casino Mocca and a few others name who have filled that void. The small team around Szabolcs Temesvári sources its beans from the likes of Nordic Approach and applies a meticulous range of skill and outstanding quality to each roast, having turned Casino Mocca into a regular guest feature in many leading coffee shops all over Europe. This month they are making their second ever appearance in one of our boxes, this time with a beautiful washed Ethiopia from Warqee station.

The coffee was processed at the Bulega station, which is located in Sidama and owned by 30 year old Israel Degfa who runs another 13 stations and his own farm too. Unlike many other coffee traders, he regularly participates in cuppings and consults with his customers to find ways to make the coffees even better and because his quality can fetch better prices, he actively reinvests in his local community to build infrastructure, education and health projects.

During our own cupping session last month, this coffee was one of the clear standouts and we’re thrilled to have it complete our yummy lineup for this month.
