Roaster profile: Morgon Coffee Roasters

Coming at us from the Swedish city of Gothenburg, brand new outfit Morgon Coffee makes its Coffeevine debut with a stunning single estate Ethiopian coffee

One of the things that we really pride ourselves with is our commitment to feature roasters from all walks of life and corners of the world. Not just the big names that everyone knows and loves but also the smaller guys, those who just started or those who are doing something really great in a smaller town somewhere. Sometimes, it’s hard for us to filter through all those potential partners and invite the right ones to send us samples and then at other times, it’s easier because you already had your eyes on someone for a while.

That is certainly the case with Morgon Coffee Roasters from Gothenburg in Sweden, one of the three awesome Coffeevine debutants that we’re welcoming to our huge coffee roaster family with our forthcoming November ’18 coffee box. Founded by three former Da Matteo guys who together have more than 25 years experience working with some of the world’s finest coffees, Morgon Coffee Roasters is a fresh and fun new brand that has a commitment to the highest quality at its core.

After leaving Da Matteo at different times and for different reasons, Markus Vestergaard, Gabriella Runesson and Christian Gullbrandsson found themselves again back in Gothenburg earlier this year and came to the conclusion that it was time to start their own project in which they could build on all the valuable experience and knowledge they earned while working at one of Sweden’s most decorated specialty coffee roaster.

They launched in June of 2018 and have since been renting the roasting equipment at fellow Gothenburg based roasters Gringo while they continue building their business. Interestingly, all three are roasters but divide the rest of the admin tasks between them to ensure everyone has his or her area to look after. They are passionate about working with interesting producers who make totally unique coffees and to build long-lasting relationships with them that will stand the test of time.

Naturally, when they reached out to us to find out about a possible feature, we gladly invited them to send us some samples and behold, during our recent public cupping event in Barcelona, the Ethiopia Harenja was picked as one of the two favourites by our panel of experts and amateurs.

This coffee has a very interesting story indeed. It comes from a rare Ethiopian single estate farm run by Gizaw and Frehiwot who grow the native Dega and Gurume varietals. Since liberating the coffee trade in 2017, Ethiopia has opened the doors to working directly with independent farmers like Dega and Gurume who you’d never have had access to before. This is an exciting time for specialty coffee and for us because we get to share this unique and delicious coffee with you next month.
