When people talk about the world’s best roasters, they often name Koppi, Tim Wendelboe, Drop Coffee or Per Nordby, Nordic roasters who played a vital role in pushing the boundaries of what was commonly accepted as ‘good coffee’. These guys didn’t just set examples when it came to sourcing, but also with regards to looking at coffee roasting itself through a different lens. Not everyone understood or liked their style, but to a significant group of coffee professionals, Nordic roasters are still demigods who are to be worshipped.
Of course, our goal as Europe’s most exciting coffee subscription is to represent the entire continent and sometimes the world inside a box and we love being able to share beautiful coffees that are roasted by very different people every month. In one of our previous posts, we presented to you Macchhörndl Kaffee from Nürnberg, one of three great roasters who, together with Per Nordby, will be represented in our upcoming [4/18] coffee box.
Per is one of Sweden’s most renowned specialty coffee roasters. Since starting to work in coffee in the year 2000, he accumulated a great deal of experience and understanding of the coffee industry before taking the big step to start his own roastery, Per Nordby Kafferoastere, in Gothenburg back in 2013.
Unlike many of his peers, he does not have his own café and instead, he focuses entirely on sourcing and roasting the most beautiful coffees he can find. Per is very clear about how and where he buys his coffees and he maintains relationships with importers, exporters and farmers themselves, offering him a broad choice in excellent coffees that can all be traced back to the source.
For our upcoming [4/18] coffee box, Per submitted two different coffees that were cupped and rated by our expert tasting team a few weeks ago and following some deliberation, we settled on Per’s truly surprising and even slightly polarising Costa Rican honey-processed coffee from Volcan Azul, a farm run by Alejo Castro and his family.
The varietal, Villa Sarchi, is a slightly unusual mutation of the Bourbon varietal that grows in this part of the country. It reminded our team of crisp apple cider with a gorgeous, vibrant acidity and clean mouthfeel, but it may not be to everyone’s taste. It’s certainly unusual and very unique.

looks like he has a passion for growing his own beans and it amaze me how he succeeded in gowing a coffee roaster.
