I’ve been to Australia twice in my life. Once, as a fresh-faced 19-year old who had just graduated from school and who had been selling credit cards at Hamburg Airport for some pocketmoney and got asked to help set up a new sales location in Melbourne for this company. And then a few years later, after I graduated from university and spent six months travelling around the world with an old friend. Both times, I visited Sydney and Melbourne and on the second occasion, we even did a roadtrip from Cairns all the way back to Sydney in one of those funky campers. And yet, I never managed to get to Perth.
It’s the biggest city in Western Australia and also one of the most isolated major cities in the world and home to a very high standard of living. This is in part thanks to the major mines in the area that have provided the city with a steady income and have helped Perth flourish. It is also home to a few world-class specialty coffee roasters such as Offshoot who contacted us a few months ago to find out how we could work together to get them featured in one of our boxes.
After a short email exchange, I jumped on a call with founder and headroaster Rummy Keshet who is originally from Israel but has been in Perth for many years. He was super excited by the prospect of introducing the world to Offshoot’s coffees and tell our customers about the great work he and his team are doing. Australia is well known for having one of the world’s most refined coffee scenes and despite most famous roasters being located in Melbourne and Sydney, other Aussie cities are also viying for a place in the sun.
From the getgo, Rummy wanted to create closer connections between producers and end consumers, something that is very challenging given Perth’s remote position on the face of the earth. That is why it’s even more important to offer customers a way to learn about origins, get to know producers and appreciate their hard work through beautifully roasted and brewed coffees. One of the many ways that they do this is through community cuppings. So far, they’ve hosted more than 100! Can you believe?
I’m thrilled to introduce Offshoot as our latest Aussie global roaster partner this month and showcase one of its delicious coffees. This is a lovely washed Ethiopian coffee from Rachia, a stunning Yirgacheffe that shines with its floral and citrusy cup profile. Yirgacheffe is widely known for its excellent coffees that often consist of heirloom varieties that are grown by hundreds of small-holder farmers and then processed at various mills around the region.
This coffee offers a classic Yirgacheffe profile and is an absolute joy to drink every day.
