Nemesis Coffee: Like getting your coffee from Tiffany’s

Nemesis Coffee: Like getting your coffee from Tiffany’s

Vancouver's most exciting roaster makes its Coffeevine debut with a juicy peaberry blend from Costa Rican producer Jhon Alvarado

Over the past ten years – that’s how long The Coffeevine has been in business – we have seen a huge evolution in the style of branding and packaging that is used in the specialty coffee industry. Long gone are the days when everyone used plain Kraft paper bags with an overstuffed sticker and an ugly logo with some variation on the coffee bean or the coffee cup, though I should probably keep quiet about the latter since our logo is also an interpretation of the coffee cup. *cough*

These days, roasters are trying to constantly outdo each other when it comes to offering their fine coffees in bespoke packaging that is often so elaborate that you’d be forgiven for thinking that you’re actually unboxing an expensive necklace. In the age of oversharing on social media when everything has to be documented and as consumers become more willing to spend good money on high quality coffee, it makes complete sense that this precious product should be packaged in the most beautiful way and boy, just look at this box.

The packaging in question belongs to none other than Nemesis Coffee, a leading roastery from Vancouver in Canada. Co-founded by Jess Reno, Nemesis Coffee aims to build a vibrant community around coffee while also offering an unrivalled hospitality experience. Its iconic Pavilion in the Great Northern Way campus that was designed by Perkins&Will is testament to Nemesis’ ambition as a café and a roastery. Inside the strangely enchanting building, minimalistic design meets is blended with a high degree of transparency to invite people in without disturbing the team at work. Since its opening, Nemesis has added a few more cafés to its footprint.

I first learned about Nemesis through a former acquaintance from Berlin who moved to Canada a few years ago and is now both invested in Nemesis and works there as Head of Sourcing. His name is Damian Durda. When Damian and I caught up via video call about a year ago, I was still in the process of launching the new Global coffee roasters box and put Nemesis on the wishlist for one of the future editions. I’m thrilled we finally found the right moment to link up with it.

For its Coffeevine debut, Nemesis will roast a delicious anaerobic natural processed peaberry that consists of a blend of Typica, Gesha, SL28, Panameño and Ethiopia 47. This is a very unusual coffee not just because of the composition of varieties included in the blend but also because peaberries are still not super common, at least not in our monthly selections. It hails from Costa Rican producer Jhon Alvarado who worked closely with Nemesis to create this particular lot using an old sorting machine that had to be especially calibrated to indentifying peaberries.

In case you’re unfamiliar with this term, a peaberry is essentially a naturally occurring mutation that happens inside the coffee cherry in about 5 – 10% of the harvest. When this happens, one of the two seeds that you’d normally expect to find inside the cherry fails to ovulate. The plant then channels all of its resources into growing the single seed, which some people say has more flavour because it absorbs more of the sugars. Peaberries are usually sorted after the parchment has been removed and are processed separately from regular coffee beans.

This coffee is full of outspoken flavours and offers a really unique cup profile with notes of blood orange, cantaloupe and grape. Very fruity indeed. So if you’re feeling fruity, don’t miss out!

To receive this outstanding coffee along with its companion coffee, order our Global roasters box or the Total Package with all coffees including our European and GEMS roasters selections for April.
