#1: Reykjavik Roasters
If you look at the world’s biggest per capita consumers of coffee, you will undoubtedly find that the top 10 spots are all occupied by Nordic countries with a few others like Canada, The Netherlands and Switzerland also making the cut. If you lived in a place that had long dark and cold winters, you’d probably also drink a ton of coffee to get you through the day.
Indeed, Icelandic coffee culture in particular was often used as a reference point in the early years of specialty coffee’s rise across Europe. Coffee houses in Reykjavik are famous for being cozy, friendly melting pots for people from all walks of life, offering a very high quality cup of coffee across the board.
When the predecessor to Reykjavik Roasters, Kaffismiðja Íslands, was originally founded in 2008, it was at the forefront of bringing freshly roasted single origin coffees to the people of Reykjavik and further afield. Its first café and roastery are located at a stone’s throw from the city’s iconic Hallgrimskirkja and just up the hill from Laugavegur.
Reykjavik Roasters is run by a close friends Torfi Þór Torfason Þuríður Sverrisdóttir who, over the years, together with their awesome team have created an iconic specialty coffee brand that perfectly represents Iceland to both locals as well as outsiders.
Their Peru, Chirinos made a real impression on us on the cupping table, getting high scores from our team for its juicy flavour profile, vibrant acidity and clean aftertaste.
We’re thrilled to welcome Reykjavik Roasters to our August ’17 coffee box as the first ambassadors of their stunning country.

#2: Hola Coffee
During a recent visit to Madrid, almost everyone I spoke to said: “If you there’s one place you must visit, then it’s Hola Coffee.” This wonderful and friendly little coffee bar in lovely Lavapies is one of the most prolific newcomers to the Spanish capital’s fast-growing specialty coffee scene and it quickly amassed a truly loyal following that reaches well beyond the city’s borders.
Run by friends Pablo Caballero y Nolo Botana, Hola Coffee is the result of their mutual desire to set up their own coffee roastery after having spent many years working for the likes of Toma Café, Café Federal and a large commercial coffee roastery where they met.
Pablo spends most of his time in the café, pulling delicious espressos or brewing yummy filter coffees for the people, and considering he’s the reigning Spanish barista champion you can expect him to be good at this. Nolo on the other hand takes care of the roasting, something that is currently still done on a shared Giesen roaster.
Their approach to coffee is very accessible and lacks any form of pretentiousness. And when they’re not serving their own coffees, they throw a delicious guest coffee into their batch brewer. It was only a natural consequence that we would speak to them about working together and sure enough, during our most recent cupping their Brazil, São Judas Tadeu was one of our team’s favourites.
As one of our expert tasters summed up: “Yep, this is a truly excellent Brazilian coffee.” Join us in saying ‘Hola y bienvenidos’ to these two great guys who are the first roasters to represent Madrid in one of our coffee boxes.

#3: Lippe
Often considered the mother of all European coffee capitals, Oslo has played an instrumental role in pushing boundaries of what was commonly accepted in specialty coffee and helped lay the groundwork for a coffee shop blueprint that was copies and further developed by coffee entrepreneurs the whole world over. This city is where the first ever World Barista Champion, Robert Thoresen, came from and where another famous coffee kid lives and works, our friend Tim Wendelboe.
Lippe was founded by Alexander and Pia von der Lippe who originally began their coffee career by distributing espresso machines and grinders to the Norwegian domestic market since 1998. A few years later, from 2007 onwards, they also began to roast coffee and over the years established themselves as one of the leading coffee roasters in the city.
Their quality is second to none and they perfectly represent the ‘Oslo School’ that put Norway on the global coffee map. During our most selection process their Ethiopia, Mokanisa really stood out and convinced our team with its gorgeous layers of juicy flavours, balanced cup and sparkling acidity.
Over the years we have worked with many great Norwegian roasters and it’s a great joy to add Lippe to our family of outstanding roasters next month.
