Delicious freshly roasted coffees from Onyx, Stow and Don Gallo

The year 2018 got off to a truly great start with the shipment of our biggest coffee box edition to date. Last week, hundreds of coffee boxes left our HQ in Amsterdam to embark on their journey to coffee lovers far and near. In total, we served customers in 36 countries, ranging from Canada to Cyprus and Ireland to Indonesia.

In February, we will be celebrating another exciting triple debut from three very different roasters who will come together for the first time to make up our [2/18] coffee box. We’re looking forward to welcoming Onyx Coffee Lab, Stow Coffee Roasters and Don Gallo to The Coffeevine next month and to sharing their exquisite coffees with you.

Our first American roaster since Parlor Coffee who were featured in 2016, Onyx has been making waves in the US coffee world as of late, not to mention winning the recent Sprudgie Award for ‘notable roaster’. Based in Arkansas and founded by husband and wife team Jon and Andrea Allen, Onyx early on made it its mission to create an unprecedented level of transparency that not only set the bar high for others to follow but also gave its customers a better understanding why specialty coffees cost what they cost.

This will also be the first time that we feature a non-European roaster since Weekenders Coffee from Japan who made their appearance back in December 2016.

While US or other non-European roasters remain a small minority amongst our 36 annual roasters, we do pride ourselves on featuring roasters from all over Europe, making our box, by far, the most diverse coffee box on the continent. Over the years, we have had roasters from all major and many smaller countries but there is still some ground to cover before we can say we have truly represented the whole of Europe in our boxes. In February, we’re looking forward to welcoming our first ever Slovenian roaster, Stow Coffee Roasters from Ljubljana.

About a year ago, around the time of the Amsterdam Coffee Festival, a friend had given us a Costa Rican coffee from Stow as a present with a small note saying: ‘Maybe for the box?’ It took us a few months to find a time to make it happen but we’re thrilled to finally welcome this small Alpine nation to our family.

Finally, Spain has really been catching up on its northern neighbours as of late. Only recently we featured Puchero from Valladolid who made a lasting impression on our customers with its exquisite Guatemala, El Rincon IV and we keep on hearing about new roasters popping up all over the country. In all honesty, before Don Gallo’s Ana Cobo reached out, we had not heard of this young Spanish roaster from western Spain, but, as always, we gave them the benefit of the doubt and asked them to submit some samples.

It is truly astonishing how some of the most amazing coffees we’ve ever had sometimes hailed from the most unexpected places. Don Gallo, like Puchero, is the result of a Spanish couple being fed up with the poor quality of coffees available in Spain and setting out to make a change.

Our pick from Don Gallo: Ethiopia, Mormora Estate, natural
